I first came across Intuitive Eating in a Barnes and Noble book store. I was reading into "food addiction" or my so called idea that I was addicted to food. I grabbed the book and a large cookie from Cafe "im starting my diet tomorrow anyways right"?
Dieting Has Failed me over and over
Was the first thought that came to mind when I started reading. I felt the authors were talking directly to me. I had to stop and look around; are they watching me?
The first sentence in the chapter was "I just can not go on another diet, you're my last resort" I began to go over how many diets and macro nutrient combinations I had tried and how many diets promised permanent weight loss and a ripped core. I then began to think about all the times when a diet I had started was over where did I go next? To another diet!
Lets create a hypothetical cave man and name is Marook (I think my caveman name would be Marook). Lets say Marook is traveling along one day looking for food for himself and his family, and he passes a large berry bush but for some reason this bush is different the berries are so large he could only fit one in his palm. His mouth begins to water and his stomach begins to churn but he asks himself OH! how many points do I have left today, or I don't know this might have to many carbs? Does this sound realistic? Does this sound intuitive or even primal at that matter? So from now on remember the story of Marook or even create your own. I have created the story of Eleek and Eveek for Elyse and Evelyn. Tap into your primal signals and programming, now please don't go jumping around the house screaming like a monkey in a loin cloth and if you do make sure to upload it to YouTube.
Look back at your past diets what can they teach you?
I know from all my diets they all start the same way and end the same way.
Day 1: starts off as yes! I can do this protein shake and apple for breakfast yum... "okay they are a little bland no flavor but ill deal"
Day 2: "this oatmeal isn't very good I'm going to throw some brown sugar in here"
Day 3: Hey Mario do you want to grab some Italian after work for the movies tonight? "No man sorry I'm going to the gym and I have my protein shake anyways"
Day 4: "Ugh... today is Friday everyone is going to want to go out tonight. I think I will just go to gym do my hour of cardio and make a protein shake ill pass on any invites they won't understand they arent as determined as me" You go home after a nice hour cardio session and your mouth begins to water you notice your spouse or in my case mom has cooked some delicious caramel brittle.. The smell just overtakes you as enter through the door. "Mom can I have one?" She says "I thought you were on a diet". Well one won't hurt! It starts with one and I crave another, but I cant take anymore she will think I gave up on my diet and dieting means i'm strong! Mom leaves the room and I grab six more brittles and stuff them in my pocket. I go into my room and eat them as I pretend I am getting changed.. Getting a little scary now huh?
Day 5:
Morning: I can't believe I ate all that brittle, ugh! now im going to have to do 4 hours of plyometrics today, and you know what? I am only going to have apples all day with some chicken maybe.
Lunch Time: This salad is so good for me and im on my way to my sick abs (as friend walks through office with a cheesy pizza) "man I could really use one of those"
Dinner: Protein shake and salad it is, but that enchillada smelled so good at lunch hmm maybe on the way home ill grab one and eat half. I pull up to drive through and the smell of the food overtakes me again. I pay the clerk and chew that enchillada like I havn't seen food in weeks!
Conclusion
I would like to close this post with some great supporting data of why restriction and dieting doesn't work and why you must learn to get in touch with your body's ques (intuitive eating, hunger directed eating, mindful eating)
